At posAbilities, the individuals on our team help make the great work we do possible! Each team member contributes their unique skill sets, backgrounds, knowledge, and of course has a story to tell. For this reason, we are excited to highlight the career-defining moments our ambassadors have experienced throughout the duration of the People of posAbilities campaign.

We’d like to introduce Rey Cerio, who makes the most of his days by maintaining a positive attitude and doing his best to make others smile! Through his work as a casual employee, Rey has learned to try new things and has discovered more about himself and his community. Learn about Rey’s journey by reading his full story below.

Rey Cerio

As a casual team member at posAbilities, I work at many different programs. Through this experience, I’ve discovered the diverse dynamics of persons served and employees. In fact, the locations and people vary so greatly, the most important lesson I’ve learned is how to express myself in different ways while still maintaining who I am. This has helped me in the work that I do, including my ongoing assistance at events. I am most proud of my contributions to Stage Door Theatre’s plays, starting out as a doorman and later advancing to stage management. Working with the theatrical troupe made up of actors with developmental disabilities is always a fun experience filled with great energy and good laughs. A typical day on the job includes checking in on persons served, my team members, and accommodating everyone’s interests and activities into the day. By structuring a day around what people want to do, I am able to put a smile on people’s faces which in turn, makes me smile. What I like best about the casual position is the absence of monotony while being able to achieve simple goals. For example, ensuring others have a great day is a goal I set when I come into work every day. My advice to others is to be daring and to take risks. Always try new things and don’t be afraid of failure. You never know what you might learn. Above all, working as a casual has helped me build my character and grow personally. It has made me more empathetic towards others and has even inspired me to join movements in my community. Through casual work, I have come to understand myself on a deeper level – something that is extremely rare and rewarding to find in a job.
