At posAbilities, the individuals on our team help make the great work we do possible! Each team member contributes their unique skill sets, backgrounds, knowledge, and of course has a story to tell.

Meet Community Support Worker, Balvir Badhan!

I’m currently working at Selkirk Centre for Community Engagement, one of our day programs in Maple Ridge. My journey started back in 2001 and after 20 years, I’m still happy to be here! I’ve had the opportunity to try out a variety of positions throughout my career, working as a Residential Care Worker, Senior Support Worker, and now as a Community Support Worker. While I’ve enjoyed exploring other roles here at posAbilities, I like my current one. I’m a busy mom and need the time to spend with my kids and drive them to their activities, so I appreciate the hours of work and flexibility.

One of the most rewarding aspects of this role is assisting the folks we support to achieve their goals. It’s a great feeling to see a smile on their faces. It’s fulfilling to see how much the individuals I work with have solidified trust in me and feel that I’m a safe place for them.

While we do a lot of work out in the community, it can still be challenging at times. There’s still a lot of stigma associated with people with disabilities. But that’s why we continue to do the work we do and have a presence in our community. We’re involved in a variety of partnerships and initiatives in the city of Maple Ridge. We’ve joined forces with the Salvation Army, Meals on Wheels and I particularly enjoy when we participate in local community competitions! My teammates and I were even nominated and received the posAbilities Inspire Award for organizing and decorating our van float at the Maple Ridge Christmas and Santa Clause Parade. If you’re ever in the Maple Ridge area, be on the lookout for our Selkirk team!
