Vancouver General Hospital to host free workshops, event May 12

They are everyday heroes who provide physical, emotional and financial support for people who need it most: the elderly, chronically ill or those living with a disability. And for all their work, British Columbia is celebrating family caregivers May 7-13.

“On behalf of all British Columbians, I would like to thank all those family caregivers who put their families first every day. Your dedication and commitment to improving the quality of life of friends and family members is truly inspiring” says B.C. premier Christy Clark, in a news release.

The weeklong recognition acknowledges both the joy and pressure experienced when caring for a  loved one, and reminds caregivers to take time during the week to recognize and acknowledge the work they do. People who know a family caregiver are encouraged to thank them for their essential work.

Premier Clark also noted that resources are available for caregivers, including a home care and home support program, as well as a caregiver network that support groups, workshops and other resources for those coping with the stress and fatigue.

In April, the B.C. Seniors Home Renovation Tax Credit came into effect to help alleviate the burden and enable family caregivers and seniors to remain together.

Vancouver and communities across the province are hosting events to honour caregivers. On Saturday, May 12 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Vancouver General Hospital will celebrate caregivers by offering free workshops and an opportunity to meet other caregivers in a relaxed and fun environment. Pre-registration is recommended.

PosAbilities Today would also like to honour caregivers by telling their stories. Please contact the newsroom if you’re a family caregiver and would like to share the joys and the challenges of caring for a loved one.
