posAbilities, Kickstart Disability Arts and Culture and Burnaby Association for Community Inclusion (BACI) are once again sponsoring a film this year during the Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF).  “Becoming Bulletproof” introduces us to a group of individuals striving to become full human beings through their artistic endeavours. This riveting ’film within a film’ (shot on vintage Hollywood locations) immerses us in a dynamic, inclusive world of discipline and play, raising questions about why we so rarely see real actors with disabilities on the big screen.

This trio of sponsors has been involved with the VIFF for several years,  supporting amazing film’s like the academy award winning Canadian film Gabrielle, which stars Marion Rivard, an actress who has William’s syndrome.  Our goal is to get this kind of content into the watersupply of mainstream media. It’s possible – just think back to the television sit-com Will and Grace. This show was the first network prime-time series to feature gay characters in a gay milieu. It was tremendously successful, drawing a loyal audience in short order.

This year’s documentary film is equally engaging, and offers insight into how to build an inclusive film project, while touching on a variety of tender topics and experiences of the actors with challenges and the volunteers who are their friends and supporters.

Join us at the VIFF to see this film and to spread the word! Through consumer demand, we can begin to realize the vision of actors with disabilities involved in all areas of film – from production and writing through to acting and technical roles.
